The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court stated that authorities should adopt a uniform policy throughout the state in a case hearing brought by a doctor. The doctor filed a petition claiming that he was not in a position to comply with the bond conditions executed during his admission to medical college. As per the bond, he pledged to serve the state government for 10 years and in default, he would have to pay Rs 2 crores as damages.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Dr. Sreejith Ravi, who had secured a seat in Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital to pursue a neurology course under the All-India quota and completed the course in September 2020. After completion of the course, the medical college dean issued a communication in 2021 asking the petitioner to pay Rs 2 crores after he failed to comply with the bond condition. Earlier, the government reduced the bond duration for non-service candidates from 10 years to 2 years, and the bond amount to Rs 50 lakh.

The court ruled that the petitioner either had to serve the bond period or pay Rs 50 lakh as fixed by the government after he refused to serve the bond period of two years.
